Vital steps to engineering a suitable idea.

The 1st step in writing a fantasy novel is getting an idea.
It is harder than it sounds. For you must find an idea that is workable, not stupid and interesting.

Workable means your idea must be logical and believable. In other words you will have to put rules when creating the story line.
If you are going to write about magic, then you will have to put limitations. If you plan to break the laws of physics, you must be willing to explain why and how.

On the other hand, not stupid means that the idea must be fairly self-explanatory. If you have an idea such as a magical fish that grants wishes, but all your characters in the novel wish for are biscuits to feed the fish, it is not a good idea. On the other hand, if characters wish for world peace because the world is facing a deadly war then it is a good idea. It is a good idea because is explains itself well.

Finally, the idea must be interesting not only to yourself but also to the readers so you can captivate their attention and encourage them to read on. If you lose interest in writing your book, this simply means you need to expand and reinvent your idea. This can also mean your idea is not suitable for the fantasy novel.
Your book's subject must be something that inspires and encourages your writing passion. If you believe in the idea, then it can be transformed into an intriguing novel.
